Loved the title of episode 3.10 “I Smell a Rat”. While we can certainly see a number of potential rats in the show this title seems more indicative of the rat in Sookie’s love life. Bill professes to love Sookie despite his unwilling admission that her Fae blood is what initially drew him too her. It was disingenuous at best… sort of like a crack addict saying that the crack has no real influence. Eric and Sookie also shared their first kiss and BOTH were quite into it.
So who is the rat?
Is it the rat she can see? Eric has always been interested in Sookie and has made no secret of it. He tricked her into a blood bond by faking that an injury was worse than it really was. He also admitted that he was in fact keeping Lafayette prisoner and made no apologies. He also bit Sookie’s cousin Hadley to obtain information. He doesn’t try to hide his nefarious ways… he owns them. You can always count on Eric to find some way to get what he wants. In episode 3.10 he chains her in the basement to use her in his plan to take Russell out. This will likely end up protecting her, as well as one can be protected when a psychopath is after you, and saving his own bacon too. He saw the opportunity and took it. You can count on Eric to stay true to his wily and sometimes wicked ways.
Is it the rat she can’t see? Bill cannot offer assurances that his love is genuine and he has lied to Sookie numerous times of late. He is still keeping a big secret from her too. Possibly that she was an assignment from the Queen of Louisiana and his arrival in Bon Temps and his pursuit of Sookie was no mere coincidence, but a planned event. His Sookie file has yet to be explained honestly either. And let us not forget that he cheated on Sookie only days before this episode aired AND almost killed her (by accident of course). We ALL have those little “ooopsies” right? When things go dark and we make up next to body parts or next to the shriveled husk of our lover whom we have just drained of almost all their blood? It can happen.
Bill has also had numerous opportunities to come clean and he still insists on lying to the woman he claims to love. And his early blood bond with Sookie that ensured a relationship was due to a convenient tussle with a couple called the RATtrays. Hmmmm…
In my mind he is definitely the bigger rat and the title should be dedicated to him. Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.

I like your post, it’s def Bill who is the rat, but it won’t be discovered until the finale I think.
It’s like you say, Bill never tells the truth and if he does, it’s only a fraction of the truth. Eric is very forthcoming with everything he says and does. He doesn’t hide the truth or his nature. He even had bad concience about lying to Sookie in ep. 2 and tells her that the night after.
I think that there was a big misunderstanding between Sookie and Eric in this episode. She thought he wanted her delicious blood and told him she would never give him what he wanted! Eric then thought Bill had told her about the daywalking after draining her, and believed Sookie didn’t care to help him out. Just watching the scene you can see Bills smug face and little smile.
I don’t know what Bill is thinking keeping Sookie so in the dark with vampire world, he’s going to get her killed with her ignorance and naivety. And hiding out in Jasons house is not a safe haven!! Russell would find her in minutes and enslave her, kill Bill and everybody close. The best thing for them would be to work together with Eric… but no, Bill can’t have that, he tells Sookie nothing about what’s going on. She has to go to Eric the next day bc obviously Bill keeps her in the dark.
Eric now probably thinks it’s futile to get Sookie to co-work on bringing down Russell, there is just no time for talking and persuation. So Eric for the sake of himself, Pam, Sookie, vampire/human relation, jails Sookie to use her in his plot to take down Russell. It was never going to be easy and with no co-operation they are doomed.
Very well put. Bill’s ego and wanting to keep Sookie all to himself will get her killed.
Exactly! And Eric will have to play the same part as in Russells mansion, so it will come off as cold. Eric is not throwing Sookie under the bus after protecting her all this season, he is clearly falling in love with her.
i would deffinitly say that eric was the better of two ‘evils’, or though eric is not evil, but its the sayn you know
Alan Ball better not keep Bill and Sookie together next season or Team Eric has a lot to say to him.
Read an article that AB likes Bill and Sookie’s relationship that there’s true love between…well from what we’ve seen from True Blood they showed it but from the books (I’ve read only book 1-4 currently on 5th) Bill is not her match.
Fresh Blood episode…I had teary eyes when Eric walked out under the sun T-T that’s a unforgettable moment. AB better see what Eric for what he really his to Sookie or I’m gonna scream. How can he not feel that there’s passion between them.
Can anyone tell me if fans of Eric and Sookie have already made their move to AB and spoke their devotion on E&S lol or something like that, so they’re together in season 4. If Bill and Sookie stays together it’s kinda boring Eric is sooooo much thrilling. Just thinking about Eric gives me shivers and my heart melts for him ;d
Since Alex plays him being hot and 6’4; if I’m correct he’s my dreamboat. Since I’m 5’9. I want to hug him!!!!
Bill is the rat!!
