You Smell Like Dinner Episode Recap

This episode is hands down my favorite of the entire series thus far. I imagine I might feel that way about upcoming episodes as well because frankly season four rocks! It’s Ericpalooza!!! There is just no greater thrill than to see a character that I have come to love getting such a full and wonderful story for this season. Its been soooooo long coming….

This episode begins with Eric and Sookie still talking about how he bought her home. I said last week that I really wanted him to tone down the way he was speaking to her and he did… showing that sweet side we all know can come out… only for Sookie (and sometimes Pam). I loved their interaction in this scene.

Sookie: What do you want from me?
Eric: Everything
Sookie: You can’t have it.
Eric: I bought it.
Sookie: You bought my house. The house does not come with me inside it.
Eric: Then I seriously overpaid.

He tells her point blank that he cares about her and that if all he wanted was to drink her blood again he could just do it already but he wants her … to want to be his. She is not liking what she hears but she does look a bit unsure of herself at times. I wanted to slap Sookie though when she said she could never be with Eric the way she was with Bill. Gag! Eric doesn’t even let that rile him, the man ooozes confidence.

Eric: I know you, there are two Sookie Stackhouse’s. One who still clings to the idea that she’s merely human and the other who’s coming to grips with the fact that you are better than that.

Sookie: And what do you think is going to happen when I do come to grips with it? Do you think my legs are just gonna magically open for you?

Eric: Well, that was saucy, must have been fairy Sookie talking. I like when she comes out.

As he leaves the house he hears the door squeak and in a truly adorable moment he tells her he will have that fixed. The very next day, he does get it fixed. Pretty boys are worthless if they cannot also do a load of laundry and take out the trash. Maybe it is just me and MY personal love language .. which is gifts of service, but I have always loved that Eric in the books took care of Sookie by making sure her household repairs got done or that she got a new cell phone or coat. The man took spectacular care of Sookie and we have seen some glimmers of that on the show. Woot! When Sookie comes home after getting groceries the next afternoon the door is fixed and there is a new microwave on the table. Of course she also notices that he left a carafe of blood in the fridge and there is an armoire in her living room that leads to a basement cubby for Eric’s use. She is furious that he built a cubby in her house but I was laughing my ass off the whole time.

Sookie runs off to Bill’s house after Eric leaves. She is suprised to be accosted by snipers and by the fact that Bill is the new King. She walks in on him getting dressed after just having had sex with his employee… who he also fed off of. What happened to the synthetic blood he insisted upon drinking all the previous seasons. He even lectured Jessica about only drinking Tru Blood. THAT went right out the window.. Bill Compton hypocrite be thy name. The man gets some power and suddenly all his subjects are there for his amusement and nourishment.

Sookie asks him to figure out how to get her house back and even babbles some nonsense about being scared of Eric. Pulease.

Next we see Eric he is meeting with Queen Bill. Bill asks Eric to sell the house back to Sookie or to himself but Eric refused. Then Bill asks Eric to take care of a witch coven nearby and when he confirmed that they were in fact necromancers, Eric was is on it like Donkey Kong. I wonder if we will see any flashbacks of The Inquisition that Eric mentioned. Anyway his bow and little smile as he left was laugh out loud funny. Who could take Queen Beel seriously anyway?

Sookie meanwhile goes to Fangtasia to see Eric but he is taking care of that witch business. Yeah, she is really “scared”. She speaks with Pam who advises her to accept Eric’s offer and implies that she would be one “satisfied” lady if she did.

Eric is crashing wiccan circle time and he is surprised to see Lafayette there. He turns his attention to Marnie and asks that she agree to stop meeting at once and that she not agree and then meet behind his back. There is no behind Eric’s back!

Marnie does not accept his most reasonable offer and tries to get the witches to join hands for some spellwork. Eric seizes her and bites. He stops only when Tara comes up behind him and tries to stake him. Before he can turn on Tara though, Lafayette joins hands with the other coven members giving them the super juice they need. Marnie is able to connect to the spirit of a powerful witch and she casts some sort of banishing spell. IMO the True Blood writers should make the spirit that of some young witch that Eric used to know from centuries before… and perhaps betrayed. Who knows if they will go that route but I think it would be awesome. Anyway see this thread with speculation about what exactly Marnie said in her spell.

Eric stops dead in his tracks and as the spell works on him he looks terrified and confused. When it is finished he looks around like he has no fracking idea where he is and he bolts.

The next we see him he is walking shirtless down the road (I assume towards Sookie’s house – please) and Sookie sees him as she is driving home. What part of the spell made him lose his shirt I wonder?

Sookie calls out to him and he ignores her.

Sookie: Eric, it’s me Sookie.
Eric: Who?
Sookie: You KNOW me.
Eric: No, I don’t.

He is about to walk on an ignore her but something stops him. He turns, smells, stumbles a bit closer and asks why she smells so good. LOL. I thought maybe they were going to end this episode with him attacking her in her car because we have seen a clip of something along those lines but I guess we need to wait and see how this plays out.

Fabulous episode, fabulous acting. I love me some Eric Northman!!

I agree with you…I love this episode. Eric’s expressions during the spell were priceless him and Fiona deserve an Emmy. On she been scare of Eric. I don’t think she meant she was scare of him. I think she meant she was scare in general with the fairies and everything going around her. Remember the comment that she made to Tara: “He only bought my house…that’s all”. So really deep down it’s not even a big deal for her and she was so scare why she doesn’t go to live with somebody else…like Jason? Eric really can’t buy every single house in Bond Temps. I don’t think his plans for the future include real state. Or she could have rent one of Sams’ houses. And another thing if she dislikes him so much…why she even thought of keeping the armoire? I hope the romance blooms this season. I don’t want a mere cheap hook up. And I hope Sookie wakes up and see the true Bill and falls in love with Eric. And like she said, I don’t want her be with Eric the same way she was with Bill. There romance was base in lies regardless Bill falling for her. When a relationship starts that way it ends in a bad way. Just saying. Love your review. I can’t hardly wait for next episode.

  2. i certainly luved the second episode better than the first…and it is definitely all ERIC…he really is all that and a bag of chips…*sighs*, one minute, serious, funny, sexy, or even a tad`bit scary but through it all he`s the Eric i’ve grown to luv as well…*my hubby thinks i’m crazy*…lol, to be so `vested in a fictional character, yeah now he`s a big TB fan as well, but for some reason he prefer`s Sookie with that other guy…well to me there`s no one other than ERIC when watchin` TB, can`t wait for AS to get an award this year for such a fine job of bringin`Eric Northman to life, luv it *thumbs up*

I really don’t want to have high expectation in these season, we all now Alan Ball can be very deceiving. Fingers cross and hope for the best, I still don’t like Sookie attitude towards Eric or the sweet talk she has with Bill. I don’t now what you think guys, but every time I see queen beell and hims sarcastic smiling face I feel sick, I try hard but still can’t stand him. Overall I don’t want Bill to die, him is a important part of TB and for Eric and Sookie caracters develop is well. The only thing who nevers disappoint me was Mr.Eric Northman , him is always saussy , self confident and sexy as hell. Ops ! I almost forget hims sweet and tender side when hims better side appers . I love the way Alexander plays Eric, I couldn’t imagine better actor for the roll . So , wait and see if we still have a motive to smile at the end of these season.

I like Bill but The cute Eric who forgets his semi evil side is so much better.

Hi :) I love your writings b/c you speak the truth about Queen Bill and ExS.
We can rest assured that during the time Eric is without his memories we will have our fill between these two. I just saw clips from the next episode and I already died from the cuteness of Eric Northman. Thinking about that picture of Sookie stopping Eric from killing Queen Bill lol and ExS relationship that will develop later on, I cannot wait for the upcoming weeks.
I’d wish this season has more episodes. Is it only 12 or more than that?

  6. This was a really good episode, and damn, Eric was so funny at times :)
I really don’t understand what there is to be scared off, but heey, Sookie will eventually see she needs to be with Eric. The fact that he can live in her house after the spell only proves that. Now all we have to hope for is that the writers hang on to the story of the fourth book and were homefree…

  7. Thanks for the review!! I love the way you write!! All hail Sheriff Northman!!!

WTH is wrong with keeping to the original psychology of the characters? Eric killed Claudine? So that means that we will not see the Fairy Wars. Amazing that the books have sold like hot cakes, but AB doesn’t think the the story lines are worthy of him! Again he has given Bill more than he deserved. He couldno’t fight his own battles, had to resort to betrayal and outside help. What a whimp!!!
